Composite Decking vs. Timber Decking

Garden decking has become extremely popular, it’s a great landscaping option for outdoor spaces. Two of the most common options when it comes to choosing decking are composite and timber.

Composite Decking vs. Timber Decking – The Pros & Cons.

Price: Composite decking can be expensive, so if you're on a tight budget, you may have to go with an alternative material. Wooden decks tend to have a lower upfront price tag in comparison to composite but over time they require regular maintenance and replacing more often.

Maintenance: Timber decking must be regularly painted, stained or sealed to defend against moisture whereas composite only needs a sweep or wash to keep the boards looking good.

Durability and Lifespan: Timber decking can last for quite a few years as long as it is maintained regularly, composite decking never has to be painted or stained and will last for years with virtually no effort at all.

Workability: Both timber and composite decking are easy to cut and fasten using common tools, one area where composites come out ahead is they can be bent easily to form curves.

Strength: One of the major drawbacks of composite decking is the strength, composite requires more support than timber decking.

Look and feel: Composite decking comes in a range of colours and finishes; the finish is also considerably more consistent to timber. Timber decking tends to have colour variations due to the natural wood and knots.

Safety: Timber decking can result in splinters if not properly maintained and can be slippery when wet. If you would like a non-slip and very child-safe deck then composite decking is the clear winner.

Both materials offer their own benefits and come with specific drawbacks, the right choice will come down to budget and the overall look you want to create. If you are looking for a highly durable, low maintenance option, composite might be right for you. However, if a timber appearance with all the natural beauty of real wood is an important factor to you, timber decking might be a better option.
