Say hello to Doug, our Head of Finance

We'd like you to find out a little bit more about the faces behind James Burrell. This time, we'd like to introduce you to Doug Reid, our Head of Finance.

What does your day involve?

I am a member of our senior management lead team and head up our finance, admin and HR functions. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the job is that no two days are the same. I am never quite sure what is likely to evolve throughout the day or week. One day could involve dealing with our auditors, bankers, insurers or solicitors. The next might be taken up with customer or supplier meetings, property dealings or addressing large or small issues that arise with certain orders, deliveries or payments. Alternatively I could end up dealing with a HR or other procurement matter. Mostly it is a little mix of all of these and then something else that you don't expect which keeps me on my toes.

What's your favourite thing about the company?

Definitely the people. We have a great and diverse set of team members right across our whole business who are very dedicated and loyal to the business. The ethos of Steve and Mark, our directors and owners of the business, is that our people are our greatest asset. If the business treats them fairly, then people will appreciate that and want to work hard for the company in return. The evidence in the large number of staff members that we have with various long term service awards is there to be seen and testament that this policy works well. It's a shame more businesses don't do the same.

What would be your perfect weekend plans?

Spending quality time with my family and seeing them happy. My daughter is 15 years old and competes nationally and shortly internationally in karate. Weekends are often spent travelling the length and breadth of the country for her competitions, monthly England training sessions or other karate related activities. Unfortunately squeezing a round of golf in around this and other family commitments is becoming more and more tricky.

Keep a look out for the next addition and to find out a little bit more about the faces behind the operation.
